What is Child Support Intended to Cover?

Writer's picture: Alexandra MuléAlexandra Mulé

In New York, child support covers a child’s basic needs, including food, clothing, housing, medical care, and education. Childcare costs may also be included if the custodial parent works or attends school.

However, expenses for extracurricular activities and unreimbursed medical costs are considered add-ons and are usually split pro rata between parents, in addition to basic child support. Transportation related to visitation may also be included. While child support covers essential needs, it does not typically pay for luxury items. The goal is to ensure both parents contribute to their child’s well-being and daily expenses.
